Gooden and Feltner Shine, But Eagles Drop Game 1 of Doubleheader to SEMO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – In game two of the series and game one of Saturday's doubleheader, runs came early and often for both the Eagles (16-21, 5-6 OVC) and the Redhawks (27-10, 10-4 OVC) as Morehead State dropped their second in a row to SEMO 16-9.

Nick Gooden and Jackson Feltner starred for the Eagles in the contest, as both men hit a three-run homer. Gooden's blast put the Eagles on top 3-0 in the first inning, while Feltner's team-lead-tying tenth homer of the season put Morehead back on top 7-6 in the second inning. Nick Gooden drove in another run in the second inning, finishing with four RBI.

After Gooden's homer in the first, Isaias Guzman smashed a no-doubt blast to left-centerfield for his fifth homer of the season, his third trip around the bases in his last four games.

SEMO joined in on the home run derby in the first inning, as a grand slam gave the Redhawks a 6-4 lead headed into the second. The hosts did not stop there; however, as four more runs crossed in the bottom of the second to give them a 10-8 lead.

Two scoreless innings passed, as Joe Rotkis and Will Grimmett combined to slow the Redhawks' offensive attack before SEMO struck with a three-spot in the sixth. Two of those runs came on a double from Ty Stauss.

Morehead State cut back into the deficit in the seventh, as Colton Becker doubled to make the score 13-9, but it was too little, too late, as Tommy Windt held the Eagles to that one run over 7.2 innings of work, striking out seven batters in long-relief to give SEMO a 16-9 victory.

Eight of the nine starters in MSU's batting order recorded a hit, including Alex Jacobs, who extended his on-base streak to 35 games, going 2-4 in the contest. Morehead State will look to salvage the series in the second game of the doubleheader, with that game being the series finale.
