MOREHEAD, KY --Sophie Benharouga and Sandra Lin both recorded double-doubles, but the Morehead State women's basketball team fell to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks 87-77 at home Saturday.
The double-doubles by Benharouga, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Lin, who had 19 points and 10 assists, led the Eagles in the contest. Veronica Charles helped out with 16 points, four assists and three steals.
Morehead State out-rebounded Southeast Missouri State 31-28 in Saturday's game, led by Benharouga's 10 boards.
The Eagles hit the road for a date with SIUE Thursday, with tip-off slated for 6:00 PM ET.Â
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 12-6 advantage, Morehead State went on a 6-0 run with 5:24 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Valentina Saric, to increase its lead to 18-6. The Eagles then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 23-13 advantage. Morehead State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 23 points.
Southeast Missouri State rallied to take a 33-29 lead before Morehead State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 2:29 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Saric, to take a 35-33 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Morehead State dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Morehead State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 44-41 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Charles, to expand its lead further to 50-41 with 6:14 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Redhawks had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Eagles still entered the fourth quarter with a 60-56 edge. Morehead State scored six fast break points in the quarter.
Southeast Missouri State then erased the Morehead State lead in the game's final quarter for an 87-77 comeback victory. Morehead State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
