LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Women's hoops went into the half leading Little Rock 31-30, but could not overcome the defensive intensity of the Trojans, falling 61-46 Thursday afternoon.Â
Veronica Charles led the Eagles with 17 points and eight rebounds. Valentina Saric tacked on seven points from the bench and Hallie Rhodes chipped in as well with six points. Morehead State out-rebounded Little Rock 29-25 in Thursday's game, led by Charles' eight boards.
The Eagles now head to Cape Girardeau, Mo. Saturday for a 3:00 PM matchup with SEMO.Â
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-0, Morehead State went on a 6-0 run with 6:16 left in the first quarter to tie the game at six. Little Rock then pulled ahead, sending the Eagles into the second quarter down 14-8.
Morehead State kept the Trojans from increasing their lead before going on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a three from Saric, to take a 31-28 lead. The Trojans cut into that lead, but the Eagles still enjoyed a 31-30 advantage heading into halftime. Morehead State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 23 points.
Morehead State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Trojans 45-39 entering the fourth. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring six of its eight points in the paint.
Little Rock kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 53-41 advantage before Morehead State went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 53-46 with 4:28 to go in the contest. Little Rock responded and outscored the Eagles the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 61-46. Morehead State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its seven points in the paint.
