MOREHEAD, Ky. -- It came down to the final dual, and even extra points, but Morehead State Beach Volleyball's No. 1 pair of
Trinity Miller and
Sydney Wyman rallied from a set down and won the third 18-16 over the OVC Pair of the Year from Chattanooga as the Eagles went 2-0 and advanced in the winner's bracket at the OVC Tournament Thursday.
MSU (13-11), the third seed, opened the day with a 3-0 win over sixth-seed Eastern Illinois and then rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off the Chattanooga Mocs 3-2. MSU moves on to the face top seed and host UT Martin at 3 p.m. ET Friday, which is guaranteed to be the Eagles' lone match they'll have to play Friday.
In the triumph in the nightcap, MSU went down 1-0 but tied it when No. 4
Irene Wogenstahl and
Andrea Grimes won 21-17, 24-22. A loss at No. 2 had MSU down to its last chances. At No. 3,
Anya Reinhard and
Abby Hulsman persevered after falling in the first set. They came back two win the second 21-11 and then battled past Julia Davis and Madi Morris 18-16 to set the stage for the final dual.
Like their teammates, Miller and Wyman found themselves trailing the OVC Pair of the Year, Neva Clark and Joy Courtwright, 1-0. But they dug deep and outlasted their foes 25-23. With the No. 3 pairing still going, the dual got exciting. The pairs traded points back and forth before Miller and Wyman scored the final two to win 18-16. Their win stopped a six-match losing streak for the Eagle partners.
Earlier in the day, MSU disposed of the EIU Panthers 3-0.Â
Peyton Kennedy and
Brenna Bommer got the win started with a straight-set decision at No. 5. Wogenstahl and Grimes also won in two sets to give their team a 2-0 cushion. At No. 2,
Bridget Bessler and
Kinsey McAfee sealed the victory with a 21-13, 21-7 win. Nos. 1 and 3 were halted unfinished.
