EVANSVILLE, IN --The Morehead State women's basketball team battled to the end on Wednesday, but fell to Tennessee State in the first round of the OVC Tournament, ending its season.Â
The Eagles (15-15) had two players score in double figures, led by Hallie Rhodes, who had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Veronica Charles tacked on 10 points, five assists and two steals and Blessing King added nine points and 13 rebounds.
Led by King's five offensive rebounds, Morehead State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in nine second chance points.
Morehead State's defense held Tennessee State to only 9.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
Morehead State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Morehead State then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Charles, to take an 18-17 lead. The Tigers then came roaring back to take a 28-26 lead heading into halftime.
Morehead State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Eagles faced a 42-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
Morehead State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 58-50. Morehead State took advantage of five Tennessee State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
