CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Isaias Guzman put together a stellar showing at the plate Friday, hitting two homers, but the Morehead State baseball team fell to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks 13-11.
Sophomore Josh Furtado (2-1) took the loss on the mound for Morehead State (23-19, 8-8 OVC).
Guzman went 2-for-4 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with three RBIs. Senior Roman Kuntz added to Guzman's awesome power-hitting performance by going 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Freshman Nick Gooden also chipped in for the Eagles, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Morehead State plated two runs when Gooden left the yard with senior Ryley Preece aboard.
The Eagles lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 7-2. Morehead State scored twice on senior Colton Becker's two-run homer, which brought the score to 7-4 in favor of the Redhawks.
Southeast Missouri State built their lead to 9-4 before the Morehead State offense got going, tying the ballgame at nine in the sixth. The Eagles hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring five runs.
The Redhawks broke up the tie and grabbed the lead heading into the eighth inning, when Morehead State got back on the board. The Eagles scored twice on Guzman's two-run homer, evening the score at 11-11. Southeast Missouri State then scored two times over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 13-11 win.
