Baseball Forces Winner Take All Game, But Falls Just Short of Title at OVC Tournament

MARION, Ill. -- The Morehead State baseball team gave Championship Saturday everything it had, forcing a winner-take-all Game 11 at the OVC Tournament, but the Eagles fell just short in the season's final game, losing 9-6 to Southeast Missouri at Mtn Dew Park.

Logan CastlemanWill GrimmettLuke Helton, and Roman Kuntz were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Despite the season coming to a close, the Baseball Eagles can hold their heads high. Morehead State finished 4-2 at the tournament, ending the season 37-24 with an abundance of broken records, graduates, and the knowledge that the Eagle Empire is proud of the 2024 Morehead State baseball team.

GAME 1 | Morehead State 13, SEMO 6 F/10

In one of the best games in the history of the OVC Tournament, Morehead State prevailed 13-6 after late rallies to force a winner-take-all contest. Luke Helton got the start for the Eagles, throwing five innings. Helton threw over 230 pitches in two starts at the tournament across 14 innings.

After the Redhawks jumped out to an early lead, Logan Castleman blasted a three-run home run to put Morehead State on top 3-2 in the fourth inning. Colton Becker legged out an infield single to score MSU's fourth run in the fifth inning.

SEMO responded, and took a 5-4 lead after the fifth. Down to its last two outs, Morehead State retook the lead in the ninth, as Roman Kuntz launched a go-ahead two-run homer -- his 33rd of the season -- to give MSU the lead. SEMO tied the game in the home half, sending the OVC Tournament's 10th game into extra innings.

MSU broke the game open in the 10th, with Davis Germann getting things started with a swinging bunt that scored Logan Castleman. Another run crossed on an error before Colton BeckerRoman Kuntz, and Nick Gooden hit three straight run-scoring singles and Isaias Guzman drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Will Grimmett locked down the Redhawks in the home 10th, forcing a winner-take-all Game 11.

GAME 2 | SEMO 9, Morehead State 6

In the OVC Tournament's final game, Morehead State could not overcome a seven-run deficit in the late innings, falling to the eventual champion Redhawks.

MSU took an early lead on an RBI single from Nick Gooden in the first, but SEMO took a lead of their own with a two-spot in the home half.

Hayden Robbins roped a double down the left field line to tie the game in the second, but SEMO scored seven unanswered following that to take a commanding 9-2 lead.

Morehead State rallied in the seventh, plating four runs. Roman Kuntz brought his season RBI total to 100 with a two-run double before Nick Gooden drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Isaias Guzman provided what ended up being MSU's final run with an RBI double to left center.

Joe Rotkis and Matt Bettio shined on the mound for MSU in the loss.

This summer, the Eagles will regroup and begin preparations for a return to Marion, Illinois in 2025.
