Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State opened an early lead, but a big fifth inning proved too much to overcome as the Eagles fell to SIUE 12-6 Friday in Edwardsville, Ill., in the Ohio Valley Conference opener.
SIUE (8-12, 1-1 OVC), leading 5-4, sent ten batters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits and an Eagle error. The highlight was a three-run home run by second baseman Mack Mitchell to center field to start the scoring for the Cougars.
Morehead State (8-12, 0-1 OVC) got the scoring started in the second inning, loading the bases with two walks and a single, leading to shortstop

The Eagles got two more runs in the third on
Alex Kean's fourth home run of the season, a blast over the fence in right field with one out. MSU got the bases loaded with one out but couldn't add to the tally.
The Cougars responded to the early Eagle offense with three in the third inning capped by a two-run single by left fielder Lane Crowden. They took the lead 5-4 in the fourth on a two-RBI triple by third baseman Ethan Willoughby.
Morehead State scratched out single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, leaving the bases loaded in the eighth for the second inning in the game.
SIUE's (2-1) Liam McKillop picked up the win. He threw 2.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked three batters and struck out two.
Trevor Callahan (1-3) took the loss for Morehead State.
