MSU Offense Explodes for 20 Hits and Takes Series Opener at UT Martin 20-4

Hunter Thomas Leads MSU Eruption Going 5-7 with a HR and 7 RBI

Morehead, Ky. -- Powered by catcher Hunter Thomas' five hits and seven runs batted in, Morehead State pounded out 20 hits and took a 20-4 win over UT Martin in the opening game of a three-game series Thursday evening in Martin, Tenn.

Thomas got Morehead State (12-23/ 2-11 OVC) on the board early. After a leadoff double by Caden Sheridan, Hunter took UT Martin starting pitcher Jacob Sitton (1-3) deep out to center field for his OVC-leading 14th home run of the season to put the Eagles ahead 2-0.

Thomas added two-run singles in the second and fifth innings and a RBI double in the eighth to pace the Eagle offense. The MSU catcher finished the night five of seven with seven runs batted in.

Morehead State starter Kamden Hawks (1-4) picked up his first career win. He pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking two Skyhawk batters and striking out five. Hawks' 36 strikeouts lead Morehead State on the season.

Ethan Davis (1) pitched four innings, picking up a 12-out save.  He allowed two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out two Skyhawk batters.

UT Martin (13-23/ 4-8 OVC) slapped nine hits and left 11 runners on base. The Skyhawks committed five errors allowing four unearned runs.

Game two of the series Friday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on ESPN+

NOTABLE
  • JJ Dutton extended his hit streak to 14 games and has hit safely in 25 of the last 27 games.
  • Davis Germann went 3-6 with a home run and doubles, driving in three and scoring three runs. He has hit safely in seven of the last eight games.
  • Caden Sheridan went 2-6 at the plate with two doubles, giving him 10 two-baggers on the season, which leads the club.
  • Griffin Olson slugged his second Grand Slam of the season in the ninth inning, a long blast over the right field fence. He finished the night 2-4 with four runs batted in. The Eagle third baseman has hit safely in the last four games.
  • Shortstop Andy Cisneros went 3-6 at the plate with two runs batted in. He's had back-to-back games with three hits.
