Eagles Come Up Short in Allen Field Slugfest

Morehead, Ky. -- The day after heavy storms roared through Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State and Tennessee Tech provided plenty of thunder as the two teams combined for 41 runs and 40 hits on Senior Day Saturday as Tech prevailed at Allen Field at Prefontaine Park in Morehead, Ky. Tennessee Tech (37-19/ 18-9 OVC) opened with eight runs in the first inning and added another in the second.

Morehead State (14-39/ 4-23 OVC) answered with a run in the bottom of the second and put up eight runs of their own in the third inning, sending 12 batters to the plate rapping out nine hits including two doubles and Aubrey Kearns' sixth home run of the season, any tying the game at 9-9.

Tech added four more in the fourth to go up 13-9; MSU's Griffin Olson blasted a 422-foot shot over the screen in right field to keep the Eagles within range 13-10.

The Tech offense kept up the pressure with two runs in the sixth, but Morehead State answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by Davis Germann's liner over the screen in right-center.

Tech added four more in the seventh and another seven runs in the 8th to end the game.

Tech's Lucas Vega (6-1) got the win. Hunter Porter (1-5) took the loss for MSU out of the bullpen,

Tech finished the series with 57 runs and 51 hits.

Morehead State pounded out 44 hits in the series and scored 31 runs over the three games.

  • The game was the 11th of the season Morehead State pitching allowed double digit walks.
  • Davis Germann went 3-5 at the plate and slugged his 10th home run of the season. For the series, he went 8-13 with three doubles, a triple and two home runs.
  • Alex Kean extended his hit streak to 15 games to end the season and slugged his 13th home run of the season.
  • JJ Dutton had three singles and four runs batted in, extending his reached-base streak to 31 games.
  • Griffin Olson went 3-5 at the plate. His home run in the fourth as his 11th of the season.
  • Eli Kirkendoll was 2-5 at the plate and slugged his fifth home run of the season in the 8th. For the series, he went 7-14 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and a home run.
