MOREHEAD, Ky. – For the first time since 2019, Morehead State track and field will send individuals to compete at the Billy Hayes Invitational, which takes place at Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind.
The meet will take place on Friday and begin at noon. The women's hammer throw is the first event.
Junior
Kaylyn Holman and senior
Lucy Singleton will be MSU's representatives. They will compete in the open 800-meter run. There are two heats with the first scheduled to begin at 5:55 p.m.
The pair are part of a 19-team field that includes host Indiana, Bellarmine, Butler, Chicago State, Evansville, Illinois State, Louisville, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Southern Indiana, Southeast Missouri and Washington (Mo.), among others.
On their own, the pair decided to attend the meet, got approval from coach Clay Dixon and traveled independently to Bloomington.
Their goal is to attempt to break the school record in the 800m as part of a last-minute tune-up for the Ohio Valley Conference Championships that will take place Thursday, May 15 through Saturday, May 17 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
"The weather is pretty much perfect and it's only an 800m, so I'm not worried about it making them tired for next week at OVC," Dixon said.
Singleton and Holman are going after MSU's record of 2:11.45, held by Natalie Norman, which she set in 2013. Singleton holds the second-fastest time at 2:11.78, with Holman's top mark at 2:18.36. Abbigail Dorn (2:13.32 in 2019), Barb Ferris (2:14.00 in 1980) and Julie Rice (2:14.10 in 1975) round out MSU's top five in the event.
Singleton ranks fourth in the OVC, with Holman in 12th. UT Martin's Rita Eimer has the league's fastest time at 2:10.36. USI's Audrey Comastri is second at 2:11.19, with UT Martin's Maggie Roy third at 2:11.23.
Holman is running in heat one. The nine-person field includes Emma Deweese of Southern Indiana. Gracie Fields of Marian (Ind.) has the fastest time at 2:16.55. Holman's is second.
There are also nine runners in Singleton's heat two, with times ranging from 2:10.94 (Caroline Echols of Washington, Mo.) to 2:14.64. Singleton has the fourth-fastest time in the race. USI's Abrielle Richard is also in the field.
