Football Eagles Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime at Davidson, 34-31

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State football held multiple leads Saturday at Davidson, but in the end it was the Wildcats who scored last and handed the Eagles a 34-31, overtime, defeat. Davidson scored the game-tying touchdown with 14 seconds left in regulation, intercepted MSU's touchdown-trying pass in overtime and kicked a game-winning 33-yard field goal.

The Eagles fell to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the PFL after defeating Davidson in the final minutes of last year's meeting in Morehead. DC improved to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Offensive highlights included another 100-yard receiving day for wideout Anthony Ice. He caught a team-best eight passes from QB Bryce Patterson for 101 yards and two touchdowns for his third 100+ effort this season. Patterson finished 21-of-30 for 274 yards through the air and also led the team with 52 rushing yards and a touchdown, his second straight game with a score on the ground.

Defensively, safety Sidney Webb stuffed the stat sheet with his third consecutive double-digit tackle performance. He had 13 stops, including a career-high three tackles for loss and his second interception of the season. Freshman defensive back Zayden Harvey also collected his first career pickoff, thwarting a Wildcat TD with a takeaway in the end zone.

MSU piled up 380 yards on offense but allowed 444 to the home team as the Eagles had a hard time containing QB Casey Bullock. He rushed for a game-best 147 yards on 11 carries, including a 37-yard score, a 77-yard rumble to the end zone and a five-yard TD. Bullock passed for 174 yards and a touchdown too.

The Eagles lit the point column first. After Webb intercepted Bullock, Patterson connected with Cross Watson for a 48-yard pass down to the one-yard line. Jackson Lanier eluded the Wildcat defense for the score at 6:33 of the first, while Jordon Price's PAT made it 7-0.

Davidson answered with Bullock's 37-yard score, and then went ahead 14-7 as Bullock raced down the home sideline 77 yards for the TD with 2:32 left in the first quarter. Price opened the second period by nailing a 39-yard field goal for a 14-10 deficit.

At 9:30 before the half, Ice hauled in a 42-pass to the end zone from Patterson, and MSU led 17-14 at the half. Patterson capped off a six-play, 48-yard scoring drive with a one-yard jaunt, and MSU moved further ahead (24-14) with 8:27 left in the third period.

Bullock collected his third rushing score of the day with 3:28 remaining before the final quarter as Davidson crept back to within 24-21. A 28-yard field goal with 14:57 left in the game tied it a 24-all before Ice broke the tie four minutes later. He got loose and scored from a pass from Patterson from 13 yards away as MSU scooted ahead 31-24.

Both teams traded punts before Davidson reached paydirt, capping a nine-play, 50-yard drive when Bruce Ravin caught a 12-yard game-tying TD with seconds left.

MSU moved the ball to the Davidson 11-yard line before a Patterson pass was picked off at the one-yard line and returned 78 yards. Ice actually hustled to the make the game-saving tackle, but the home team needed just three plays before lining up for the game-clinching boot.

Morehead State returns to Phil Simms Stadium Saturday as it'll host Stetson in the annual Homecoming game at 2 p.m. ET.
