Football Drops PFL Opener to Valparaiso

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Visiting Valpariaso held possession for more than 40 of the 60 minutes in Saturday's Pioneer Football League opener for Morehead State. The Eagles ultimately fell 37-3 to the Beacons at Phil Simms Stadium.

The Eagles fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the PFL, while Valparaiso moved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the league. It marked only the fourth win ever for Valparaiso at MSU - in 15 games.

Morehead State took the opening possession and marched 72 yards in nine plays before the drive stalled, but Jordan Price booted a 28-yard field goal for a 3-0 Eagle lead. That was MSU's only scoring possession as it now has gone 36 of the last 37 offensive possessions without a touchdown in the last three games. Following that, the Eagles were held to just 179 total yards the rest of the day while suffering four turnovers. The visitors didn't cough up the football on offense and ended with 389 total yards, including 228 passing with two aerial scores.

Valpo's defense forced the Eagle passing game into just an 8-of-30 day with three interceptions. The Eagles looked to finally score a TD late in the game but Bryce Patterson's last ditch pass was picked off at the Valpo one-yard line to end the game.

The Eagle defense did come up with a blocked field goal by Quinton Griffin in the first quarter and a crucial fourth down turnover-on-downs early in the second quarter but trailed 13-3 at halftime. MSU's last blocked field goal prior to Griffin's was in 2023 when Cooper Krezek got his hands on one at Presbyterian.

Valpo added two passing TDs in the third frame to push ahead 27-3 and finalized the margin with a rushing score and a 26-yard field goal in the fourth frame.

Sidney Webb was a bright spot on defense for MSU, recording 11 tackles while also forcing a fumble.

The Eagles continue PFL action next Saturday at Dayton Game time is 12 p.m. ET and will be YouTube live.
