Eagle Women to Wrap Up Regular Season at Little Rock Thursday

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead wraps up its regular season schedule with a trip to Little Rock Thursday. Tipoff in the Jack Stephens Center is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network with Tom Lewis and Wes Holland on the call. It can also be watched on ESPN+.
 
Morehead State is coming off a 73-62 win over Southern Indiana Tuesday night in the Eagles' home finale in Johnson Arena. The Eagles hit 22-42 (52.4%) from the floor, their highest percentage at home this season. Morehead State scorched the nets from beyond the three-point line, 12-25 (48.0%) its highest percentage this season.
 
Violet McNece led Morehead State, posting a career-high 23 points. She hit seven of her 10 shots from the floor and five of her seven three-pointers. Laura Toffali added 15 points, Josefine Enander
added 12 points, all in the second half. Landon Forbes chipped in 10.
 
The win ensures the Eagles will finish no lower than fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference standings and MSU will receive at least a bye into the quarterfinals in the OVC tournament next week in the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.
 
If the Eagles win on Thursday, the Eagles will finish third in the OVC standings. If MSU loses Thursday and Southern Indiana wins at Little Rock Saturday, USI will finish third in the OVC table.
 
Morehead State could mathematically finish in second in the standings if it wins Thursday and Lindenwood loses both games this week. The Lions host Eastern Illinois Thursday and then travel to Western Illinois Saturday.
 
Little Rock was upended by Southeast Missouri 71-62 last Saturday in the Stephens Center. Southeast Missouri shot 27-55 (49%) from the floor while Little Rock went 23-63 (37%). SEMO iced the game hitting seven of their eight free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. The Redhawks hit 16 of their 17 charity tosses in the game.
 
Jordan Holman led the Trojans with 23 points. Destinee Salgado added 12 and Alaina Payne chipped in 11 for Little Rock.
 
The Eagles and the Trojans opened Ohio Valley Conference play in Johnson Arena December 16, with Little Rock taking away a 76-63 victory.  Holman led the Trojans with 25 points, Brenna Burk added 19 and Mya Cotto finished with 11.
 
Kate Dike notched a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Landon Forbes scored 13 points and Marie Sepp and Laura Toffali finished with 12 points apiece.
 
It was a tough shooting night for the Eagles from distance. Morehead State only hit three of their 25 three-point attempts in the game. Little Rock hit 10 of their 24 three-point shots.

  • Morehead State's 18 wins on the season and 13 conference wins are both the most for MSU since the 2018-19 season. That year's Eagle squad posted a 24-11 overall record and a 13-5 OVC mark.
  • Morehead State ranks fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference averaging 63.3 points per game in league play. The Eagles rank third in the OVC allowing 61.2 points per game in conference games.
  • Morehead State shot 17-21 (81%) from the free throw line Tuesday against Southern Indiana, the eighth game this season the Eagles shot better than 80% from the charity stripe.
  • The Eagles rank sixth in the OVC hitting free throws at a 73.2% rate in conference play. For the season, MSU ranks seventh in the conference, hitting 70.5% from the free throw line.

  • Morehead State committed 24 turnovers Tuesday against Southern Indiana. It was the Eagles' highest total since they turned it over 25 times against Southern Indiana on December 20 in Evansville.
  • In OVC play, the Eagles have posted a 6-1 record when they have turned the ball over 13 times or fewer. When MSU has committed more than 13 miscues, they have posted a 7-5 record in conference games.

  • Laura Toffali posted five thefts Tuesday against Southern Indiana, giving her 89 on the season, the second-highest season total in program history. Chynna Bozeman set the record with 95 steals in the 2010-11 season.
  • Toffali leads the OVC and ranks ninth in the nation in steals. Her 2.97 steals per game rate ranks 18th in the country.
  • Toffali ranks 11th in the OVC hitting 73.2% from the free throw line in conference play.
  • Violet McNece has heated up as of late: in the Eagles' last eight games, she led the Eagles averaging 14.3 points per game. She has been deadly from distance, hitting 25-51 (49%) from beyond the arc in the last eight outings.
  • McNece set a new career high with 23 points on Tuesday against Southern Indiana. She has scored in double figures in six of the Eagles' last eight games.
  • McNece ranks fifth in the OVC with 58 made three-pointers this season. In conference games, she is hitting treys at a 44.2% clip.

SCOUTING THE TROJANS
 
Little Rock is led by Steve Wiedower, who is in his second season as the Trojans' head coach. He was named the Little Rock bench boss after serving for 15 seasons as an assistant to long-time Little Rock head coach Joe Foley. Wiedower has a record of 28-30 overall and is 22-16 in OVC play.
 
Little Rock ranks eighth in the OVC averaging 60.0 points per game in conference games. Defensively, the Trojans rank fifth in the OVC allowing an average of 61.6 points per game league play. The Trojans rank second in the OVC at 37.1% opponents field goal percentage in league games. Little Rock tops the OVC with opponents hitting just 25.6% from three-point range.
 
The Trojans rank fourth in the OVC with a +1.7 rebounding margin in conference play. The Trojans ranks ninth in three-pointer percentage at 29.8% from distance. The Trojans have taken 282 treys in league play, the second-fewest (behind Western Illinois' 272 treys) taken in OVC play.
 
  • Grad student Jordan Holman leads Little Rock averaging 17.3 points per game, which ranks third in the OVC. She also is the Trojans' leading rebounder averaging 6.8 rebounds per game (9th in the OVC). Holman hits free throws at a 81.7% rate (7th in the OVC).
