Eagle Track and Field to Make First Trip to Lee Meet

MOREHEAD, Ky. – After having a week off, the Morehead State track and field team will head to Cleveland, Tenn., for the first time to compete in the two-day Lee Fast Break Invitational. The meet will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

A total of 46 teams are scheduled to compete, with the first event, the men's hammer throw, slated to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday. The men's javelin will open Saturday's action at 9 a.m.

Among the schools that will participate include Dayton, Chattanooga, Cumberlands (Ky.), Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Lipscomb and Wright State. The meet is not expected to be scored.

MSU coach Clay Dixon is sending 22 men and 15 women to compete 58 times in 19 events.

"(It's) looking like it will be pretty great weather and competition," he said. "We are hoping the week off freshened some legs and leads to some big improvements."

The Eagles' first event on Friday will be the women's long jump, which is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Competition on day one will run through late in the evening, with the men's 10,000-meter run scheduled for 10:20 p.m. On Saturday, the women's triple jump will open the action at 10:30 a.m. The women's 4x400-meter relay is the final event and starts at 3:25 p.m.

Junior Ginger Hayden and sophomore Brooklyn Boyce will open Friday's competition with the long jump at 3 p.m. Both will be in Flight 2. Hayden's "pr" is 17'11.75"/5.48m. Boyce's "pr" is 17'01.25"/5.21m.

The women's 200-meter dash is the team's first event on the track, which begins at 3:15 p.m. The Eagles will have four entrants. Freshman Kalynn Pease will be in heat two. Her "pr" is 25.47. Sophomore Maryah Counts is in heat three. Her "pr" is 26.36. Junior Cheyenne Stark is in heat five. Her "pr" is 27.15. Boyce is in heat six. Her "pr" is 27.42.

The men's event will follow next at 3:45 p.m. Freshman Sam Afari is in the first heat; with freshmen Luke Kelly and Kyle Stepteau in heat three; sophomore Tate Glass, junior Cade Sullivan and freshman Kyler Witt in heat four; and freshman Jayce Stewart in heat six. Their "pr's" are: 21.63 (Afari), 22.28 (Stepteau), 22.32 (Kelly), 22.66 (Sullivan), 22.90 (Glass and Witt) and 23.40 (Stewart).

Back to field events, junior Erin Pease will compete in the javelin at 4:30 p.m. She is in section two and owns a "pr" of 113'05"/34.58m.

The 1,500-meter run is up next with sections spread throughout the entire day. The first women's group will go at 4:45 p.m. and include junior Lani Baskett and freshman Sydney Filippazzo in heat two. Filippazzo has a "pr" of 5:11.82, with Baskett's top time at 5:17.69.

The first group of men in the event will begin at 5:10 p.m. Junior Brady Baker is in heat one. His "pr" is 4:15.65. Heat two will include junior Garrett West. His "pr" is 4:10.07. Heat three will feature sophomores Carter Lamb and Liam Parido. Lamb's "pr" is 4:04.49, with Parido's at 4:05.29.

The 5,000-meter run also will have multiple heats at different points throughout the meet. The first group goes at 5:35 p.m. with redshirt junior Christiana Brittian representing the Eagles in heat two. Her "pr" is 18:27.47.

The first set of men in the race will run at 6:05 p.m. Heat one will include sophomore Preston Glassco, freshman Lance Garner and junior Keghan Thompson. Glassco's "pr" is 16:55.17, with Garner at 16:08.81 and Thompson at 15:54.12. Heat two will feature sophomores Ryan Richendollar and Brody Coleman. Richendollar's top time is a 15:09.14. Coleman's top mark is 15:47.90.

The women's 1,500m returns with two more heats. In the sixth section, senior Kaylyn Holman will run at 6:50 p.m. Her "pr" is 4:39.42.

The men also will have two more heats with freshman Josh Arnett in the fifth section at 6:55 p.m. His "pr" is 4:02.00.

The gun for the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase will go off at 7:15 p.m. Junior Adi Fuller is in heat one. Her top time is 11:45.67. Heat two will include senior Abby Taylor. Her "pr" is 11:17.61.

The men's steeplechase and four additional heats of the 5,000m will run from 7:45 p.m. to nearly 9:40 p.m., when the first heat of the women's 10,000m begins. The latter will include sophomore Meredith Campbell. It will be the first 10K race of her collegiate career.

The men's 10K will end the day with a projected start time of 10:20 p.m. Graduate student Aidan Massey is MSU's lone representative. His "pr" is 31:25.19.

The 10,000m race will resume at 10 a.m. on day two. The second heat will include sophomore AJ Hawkins and junior Aidan Whitsell. Both will be running the distance for the first time collegiately.

Hayden will return for the triple jump at 10:30 a.m. Her "pr" is 37'05.25"/11.41m, which is also the school record.

The Eagles are entered in the next seven events, beginning with the men's 400-meter dash at 12:20 p.m. That group will include Afari in heat one, Witt in heat four and Stewart in heat five. Afari's "pr" is 48.51. Witt's is 50.50 and Stewart's is 52.15. The women's race will follow at 12:35 p.m. and include Counts. Her "pr" is 57.46.

The 800-meter run will have MSU's largest contingent of athletes -- seven men and four women. The men's race gets things started at 1:30 p.m. Sophomore Weston Blair is in heat three. His "pr" is 1:54.37. Heat seven will include Arnett and Parido. Arnett's "pr" is 2:02.81, while Parido's is 1:58.10. Heat eight will feature Baker, Lamb and freshman Jesus Mendoza-Solis. Baker's "pr" is 2:00.22. Lamb's "pr" is 1:59.70 and Mendoza-Solis' is 1:59.54. West is the lone Eagle in heat nine. His "pr" is 1:57.70.

The women's competition will begin at 2:10 p.m. Holman is in heat two. Her "pr" is 2:17.04. Baskett is in heat seven. Her "pr" is 2:33.28. Freshman Lauren Jones is in heat eight. Her "pr" is 2:34.77. Freshman Josey Corbin has not been assigned a heat. Her "pr" is 2:35.97.

The 100-meter dash is the final individual event on the track. The men's competition will begin at 2:40 p.m. That group will include Stepteau in heat one, Kelly and Sullivan in heat two, and Glass in heat three. Stepteau has the top "pr" of 10.68, with Kelly next at 10.84, Sullivan third at 11.06 and Glass fourth at 11.36.

The women's 100m starts at 2:55 p.m. Pease, Boyce and Stark will be MSU's entries. Pease will be in heat one. She is currently ranked 189th nationally with a school-record time of 11.67. Boyce and Stark will be in heat number three. Boyce's "pr" is 12.87, with Stark's at 13.32.

The Eagles' top 4x400-meter relay team will make its outdoor debut. It will feature Afari, Stepteau, Stewart and Witt. Their top time is 3:22.05.
