Sports Medicine Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What do I need to do prior to participating in a sport at Morehead State University?
A: Each student-athlete will need to complete an insurance questionnaire, submit a copy of their insurance card (front and back), complete ATS health history form, complete an ImPACT baseline concussion test and complete a pre-participation physical that will be scheduled through the athletic training center.
Q: I am a returning student-athlete at Morehead State University. Do I need a new physical each year?
A: Yes, Student-athletes are required to receive a physical each year before participation. Returners’ physicals will be done at the end of each academic year, which will be scheduled through the athletic training center.
Q: Can I get a physical at home and bring the paperwork with me.
A: No. Physicals must be completed by Morehead State University Sports Medicine Team; no other outside physicals will be accepted.
Q: My insurance has not changed since I gave you a copy of my insurance card last year. Do I need to give you a new photocopy or can you just carry over last year’s copy?
A: It is mandatory to provide a new copy of your insurance card, front and back, and an insurance questionnaire each year.
Q: I do not have insurance. Can I play a sport at Morehead State and if not, where can I get insurance?
A: NO, no participation of any kind is allowed until you obtain insurance and show proof of insurance. Most students have insurance through their parent’s policy. If this is not possible, please contact the athletic training center so arrangements can be made.
Q: My parent's insurance will be changing (sometime) during the season. What should I do?
A: You must notify the athletic training staff as soon as you know the new information so we can properly change it in your file. If there will be a lapse in coverage you will need to make the appropriate arrangements for coverage. Failure to do so may result in full payment of all medical expenses incurred due to the injury.
Q: I am a military vet and have insurance through the VA, therefore, I have no insurance card. What do I do?
A: Simply bring us a photocopy of your military ID as proof of VA insurance
Q: I have recently had surgery, a visit with a physician, physical therapist, chiropractor or other allied health professional back home. What paperwork do I need to provide to be cleared for participation in sport?
A: One of the issues that sometimes arise during the year is that of appointments that have occurred away from campus. If this is your case you need to supply information so that we are fully updated to your situation. Items such as surgical reports (ie. what the surgeon did), physical therapy guidelines and notes, and follow-up notes from the physician noting progress or return to sport. Please understand that simply providing a note that states you may return to sport in place of the above paperwork is not sufficient. The team physician has the ultimate say as to your participation in a varsity sport.
Q: What if I get ill, such as with the flu, or have a non-athletic injury while competing at Morehead State? Who do I see for care?
A: Always contact the athletic training staff first with any injury or illness. We will refer you to either our campus student health center or proper medical physician for treatment and care of your illness.
Q: What if I have questions about supplements I am taking?
A: Always bring in any supplements you are taking to the athletic training staff. We can contact Drug Free Sports to see if the supplement is on the banned substance list. YOU are responsible for making sure that all supplements YOU ingest do not contain NCAA banned substances.
Q: What program does the Morehead State University Sports Medicine use for concussion management?
A: We utilize the ImPACT concussion management program
Q: If I get hurt playing a sport at Morehead State University and my insurance does not pay all my medical bills, will Morehead State University excess insurance policy cover the balance thus eliminating my out-of pocket expenses?
A: Yes, as long as the injury is athletic related. Morehead State carries an excess insurance policy that will pick up the remainder of the cost as long as your primary insurance has paid or denied. Student-athletes quitting a sports team must make arrangements with the athletic training staff prior to leaving for medical expenses to be covered.
