Brian “B.J.” Ellis was an assistant men's basketball coach and the recruiting coordinator at Morehead State from 2012-15. His final campaign with the Eagles marked his ninth year of coaching at the collegiate level.
Ellis worked with eight professional athletes in three seasons at Morehead State. He helped the Eagles to a 17-17 overall record and 10-6 Ohio Valley Conference mark in 2014-15, despite over half the team suffering significant injuries.
Ellis helped MSU to a 20-14 overall record and 10-6 OVC mark in 2013-14, which was another injury-plagued campaign. The Eagles made their ninth straight league tournament appearance and played in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). MSU had the OVC's No. 1 recruiting class, according to Hoop Scoop Online
In his second season, Morehead State reached the 20-win plateau for just the sixth time in school history and postseason play for just the ninth time. The Eagles also managed the league's best road record (9-7).
Ellis helped Morehead State to a 15-18 overall record and 8-8 conference mark in 2012-13, despite inheriting a program with just four scholarship players.
Ellis first worked with MSU Head Coach Sean Woods in 2011-12 at Mississippi Valley State. The Delta Devils finished 21-13 overall, 17-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, won their conference tournament and advanced to the school’s fifth-ever NCAA Tournament.
Ellis spent five years at Division II Delta State (Cleveland, Miss.) from 2006-11. He was a full-time assistant coach for three seasons after spending two years as a graduate assistant.
The Statesmen finished 55-30 (.647) overall, 29-13 (.690) in the Gulf South Conference and made one NCAA Tournament appearance. Ellis coached one NABC All-American, one GSC West Division Player of the Year and several all-region selections at DSU.
A native of Crestview, Fla., Ellis attended Okaloosa Walton CC (Niceville, Fla.) and Enterprise State CC (Ozark, Ala.) before finishing his playing career at West Florida. He won junior college state championships at OWCC and ESCC.
Ellis earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management from West Florida in 2005. He also earned a master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from Delta State in 2007. He and his wife, Courtney, have three daughters -- Payton (4), Carli (3) and Harper (2).
