Matt Schabert

Matt Schabert is in his 20th year at Morehead State and his ninth as the Director of Media Relations.  The 2025-26 campaign is also Schabert's 28th year working in the media relations business.

He oversees all aspects of Morehead State's media relations operation and supervises graduate assistants and several other assistant positions.

Schabert first came to Morehead State in 2005 and served as assistant media relations director until being elevated in 2017.

While at Morehead State, he has successfully nominated more than 50 student-athletes for CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America honors. He has helped publicize more than 20 athletes who have won major conference athletic awards and has publicized 15+ teams who have made NCAA Tournament appearances.

During his time, Morehead State has risen to the top of the OVC in social media followers, exponentially growing the department's X (formely Twitter) audience to more than 40,000 followers.

Schabert is a 2002 graduate of Ohio Valley Conference member Tennessee Tech.  He served as a student assistant at TTU from 1998-02 while working on his bachelor's degree in English-journalism.

Schabert came to Morehead State following a year as the assistant sports information director at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he handled SID and radio play-by-play duties for women's basketball and baseball in 2004-05.

Schabert spent the 2003-04 school year as a sports information intern at Virginia Tech, where he served as the primary contact for an NCAA Tournament qualifying men's soccer team, women's soccer, and swimming and diving.  He was also the media coordinator at the 2003 AAU Junior Olympic Games in Detroit.

He is a member of College Sports Information Directors of America.  He has a son, Jacob, who is a graduate of Morehead State's space systems engineering program and works as a contractor with NASA in Alabama.
