Eagles Falter at Tech, Drop 3-1 Match

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State’s volleyball team dug itself into a hole it never was able to get out of Saturday as the Eagles dropped a 3-1 contest at Tennessee Tech. MSU, which dropped its second straight OVC road match, fell to 15-7 and 8-3 in the league.

Tech, meanwhile, improved to 7-4 in the OVC and 8-12 overall. The Golden Eagles were hitting close to or above .400 for the first two sets and a majority of the third before leveling off to .270.

Emma Keough led the Eagles with 12 kills, while Holly Evans totaled 11 and Ellie Roberson had 10. MSU had 10 team blocks, including five each from Holly Evans and Annie Gruenschlaeger.

Kristina Schoo had 22 of the Eagles’ 70 digs. Liz Schuler (10), Kristie Brangers (11) and Kaitlin Craven (13) had double digit dig totals as well.

Tech got a team high 15 kills from Leah Meffert. Amanda Lindgren had 14, and Katie Kenline led all players with 27 digs. TTU out-dug the Eagles, 84-70. The Eagles made 24 attacking errors and seven service errors, while the Golden Eagles committed just 16 attacking errors.

Despite holding a 12-6 lead at one point, the Eagles could not hold off the hosts in the first set, falling 25-22. Tech hit .300 in the first set, while MSU was held to a .186 effort. The Eagles led all the way until nearly the end as Tech grabbed a 19-18 advantage it never fully relinquished.

Tech continued to stay extremely efficient in the second set, running away with a 25-14 victory. After the second set and for the match, the Golden Eagles were hitting .433 with only five errors. In the second set alone, TTU hit .567 with 18 kills and only one error. On the other hand, MSU was only able to land 10 kills and made seven attack errors.

The Eagles were able to respond in the third set, winning 25-18. Tech cooled off as well, hitting just .108 in the set. MSU had 12 kills and won 78 percent of the sideouts. Evans and Gruenschlaeger tallied three blocks each in the set.

The fourth set was close until tech pulled away late for the 25-18 win. There were nine ties and three lead changes in the fourth set.

MSU returns home on Thursday, Oct. 2 to host Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m.
