Men's Basketball Faces Co-Preseason Favorite Murray Saturday

Murray, Ky. - It’s the clash of the preseason titans. Morehead State men’s basketball team heads to Murray to battle OVC foe Murray State Saturday night. The Eagles and the Racers were picked as Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Co-Favorites. The game tips-off at 8:30 p.m. ET. 

The Eagles haven’t fared well in the all-time series; Morehead State is 45-101 against Murray State and has lost 12 of the last 13 games. The Eagles spilt with the Racers last year, winning at Morehead State, 79-74 and losing in Murray, 64-69. 

Morehead State (2-3, 1-0 OVC) is coming off of a 74-66 win at UT Martin. The Eagles led by as much as 13 in the second half, but the Skyhawks were able to pull with in three in the closing minutes. The Eagles sunk their free throws and pulled away at the end to get the victory. The Eagles hit 45.8 percent of their shots from the field and held the UT Martin shooters to just 32.8 percent, including a measly 20 percent from beyond the arc. 

Kenneth Faried tallied 19 points and grabbed 18 caroms to lead the Eagles against UT Martin. Coming into Saturday’s game Faried is averaging 19.2 points per game and an OVC-leading 13.4 boards per game. Demonte Harper is second in the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game and senior Brandon Shingles is leading the conference and 20th in the nation in assists with 6.8 dishes per game. 

Murray State (6-1, 1-0 OVC) is coming off of a dramatic win over Eastern Kentucky 62-60. The Racers trailed by eight and nine points at two different times during the second half against the Colonels. With 2.6 seconds left Racer guard B.J. Jenkins drained a shot that gave Murray the victory. The Racers are led in scoring by Sophomore Ivan Aska who is averaging 12.7 points per game, and have four other players who average double figure scoring. 

After Saturday, Morehead will not play again for 10 days due to final exams.
