MOREHEAD, Ky. - Freshman Ellie Roberson and junior Kaitlin Craven paced the Morehead State attack with 10 kills each, while junior Holly Evans and freshman Annie Gruenschlaeger notched six blocks apiece as the Morehead State volleyball squad defeated East Tennessee 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19) Saturday at Wetherby Gym. The Eagles won all three matches in their own Comfort Inn and Suites Classic by 3-0 counts and won the tournament title for the second year in a row.
Junior setter Kirstie Brangers was named tournament MVP after averaging 9.8 assists and 2.1 digs to go along with six aces and a .562 hitting percentage for the weekend. Evans and Craven each were also named to the All-Tournament list.
After a slow start to the match against the Bucs, MSU picked it up in set two, hitting .423 with 12 kills and only one attack error. For the match, the Eagles also landed 12 aces. Craven had four, while Brangers put down three.
Roberson, who led the Eagles with 29 kills in the first three matches, also hit .273 today. Evans had seven kills and a .300 hitting percentage. Brangers nearly collected a double-double with a match-high 27 assists and eight digs. Senior libero Kristina Schoo led MSU and all players with 16 digs.
The Bucs, who the Eagles held to a .157 attack percentage, were topped by Erin Ryan with six kills.
Morehead State led the dig battle with a 38-32 advantage, and MSU had 39 kills to ETSU’s 29.
The Eagles travel to Fairfax, Va., next weekend where they will face Cornell, Kent State and George Mason at the Patriot Invitational.
