MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State's volleyball team will head toward the nation's Capitol this weekend as they participate in the George Mason Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va. - just outside Washington D.C. The Eagles face Ivy League foe Cornell Friday at 4:30 p.m. and battle Mid-American Conference opponent Kent State Saturday at 10 a.m. The action concludes Saturday night at 7 p.m. against the host GMU Patriots.
MSU is 3-0 heading into the weekend. The Eagles swept all three matches last weekend to win the 2009 Comfort Inn and Suites Classic in Morehead. Freshman outside hitter Ellie Roberson averaged more than three kills per set to top MSU. Setter Kirstie Brangers was named MVP, and Holly Evans and Kaitlin Craven were also named all-tournament.
Cornell will be playing its first match of 2009 against MSU. The Big Red were 10-15 last year, but Sarah Bernson is the new head coach this season. The Eagles are 2-0 all-time versus Cornell.
Kent State has started off 0-4 in 2009 under head coach Glen Conley. Meredith Paskert leads the Golden Flashes with 3.0 kills/set, but Conley expects to have a top player back for her first match of the year Saturday against MSU. MSU leads the all-time series with KSU 3-1.
George Mason is 2-2 so far with coach Pat Kendrick leading the way. Their latest match came against top 25 foe Minnesota, a 3-0 setback in Fairfax. GMU won the only match ever between the Partiots and Eagles.
