RICHMOND, Ky. - The Morehead State volleyball team showed its efficiency in all aspects of the game Thursday night in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-17) sweep over host Eastern Kentucky at McBrayer Arena. MSU hit .292, totaled 12 blocks, and landed six aces to improve to a perfect 3-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 10-4 overall.
Sophomore
Liz Schuler led the Eagles with 12 kills, while junior
Kaitlin Craven tallied 10 kills on a .350 hitting percentage.
Emma Keough landed nine kills and did not make an error to top the Eagles' hitters at .562. She also added four blocks. Freshman
Annie Gruenschlaeger had seven kills and a team and match best six blocks.
Also for the Eagles, junior setter
Kirstie Brangers had 34 assists and three blocks, and senior libero
Kristina Schoo led all players with 21 digs.
Lindsey Loescher led the Colonels with 10 kills, but MSU forced the host team to hit only .048 for the match. The Colonels won the dig battle by a slight margin, 41-38.
MSU found itself trailing 4-2 early in the first set, but an 8-1 run quelled any hopes of a Colonel upset bid. EKU clawed back to within 13-9, but the Eagles scored the next four points to push it back out.
The second set proved to be slightly closer. MSU led 10-8, but the Eagles again rallied for the next four points before an EKU timeout halted the set at 14-8 MSU. The Colonels cut the lead to 14-10, but the Eagles answered with a 7-0 run to push the set to 21-10.
In the deciding set, MSU only trailed three times before taking a 7-6 lead for good.
Morehead State is idle this weekend and then travels to Austin Peay on Sept. 29.
