Morehead State men’s basketball will be trying to win its fifth straight game Thursday, this time on the road. The Eagles travel to Tennessee Tech for a 8:30 p.m. ET tip at TTU’s Eblen Center. MSU is also just one win away from the program's 1,000th victory.
MSU has won four straight overall and three of four in Conference play to start its Ohio Valley Conference slate 3-1, with the one loss coming on the road at preseason co-favorite Murray State. Two crucial wins over the weekend and into Monday, over Austin Peay and Tennessee State helped the Eagles hold on to a tie for second place in the OVC. MSU has also righted its overall record and is now two games on the plus side of .500 at 8-6.
Les Simmons, Terrance Hill and Kenneth Faried all played a major role in the Eagles’ success in those two games. Faried earned OVC Co-Player of the Week for his efforts.
Morehead State is just one win away from reaching 1,000 wins all-time. The Eagles entered the season with 991 wins and have won eight games this season to bring the total to 999.
Tennessee Tech is 7-7 overall and 1-2 in OVC play. The Golden Eagles have nice wins over Central Arkansas and Ball State. They beat SEMO, but lost at Jacksonville State and at Eastern Illinois, the latter coming in overtime. Thursday will serve as their OVC home opener.
Tech has three players that average double-figure scoring, led by Frank Davis, who along with Faired is the reigning OVC Co-Player of the Week. Davis scores at a 15.3 points per game clip while Kevin Murphy averages 14.5 points and Elijah Muhammad scored 11.1 per game. Alfred Jones is TTU’s leading rebounder at 5.6 boards per game, but the Golden Eagles are a very balanced rebounding team with five different players average 3.3 rebounds per game or better, leading to Tech’s team rebounding margin being 1.1 on the positive side. They also shoot the ball very well, but don’t defend shots very well, resulting in 46 percent shooting from the field for both TTU and its opponents.
After Thursday, the Eagles head further south for Jacksonville State for a 5:30 p.m. ET tip Saturday.
