MOREHEAD, Ky.--Morehead State opens the 2010-11 men’s basketball season at home for the first time since the 2005-06 season, which pre-dates
Donnie Tyndall’s hiring as MSU’s head coach. The Eagles enter the season full of expectations and ready to make a return the OVC championship game and perhaps another NCAA Trip.
A slate of tough opponents stands between MSU and that goal however, starting with Friday’s season opener against Asbury. Morehead State hosted Asbury in an exhibition last season, winning 91-57 in MSU’s final exhibition of the 2009-10 season, which led into the season opener at Kentucky. This year, it’s Asbury serving as the season-opening opponent.
NAIA Asbury is a young team, with just two seniors and two juniors. Adam Delph is the leading returning scorer from last year’s exhibition, when he tallied eight points.
Morehead State has just five returners, but those five returners form a core of talented players. Garnering the preseason media attention is senior center
Kenneth Faried, the nation’s leading returning rebounder and the OVC Preseason Player of the Year. Just because Faried gets the attention doesn’t mean he’s a one-man show. Fellow seniors
Demonte Harper and
Sam Goodman are key to MSU’s success. Harper is a combo guard, whose ability to drive the ball might be the Eagle’s best-kept secret. Goodman’s athleticism on the defensive end earned him recognition last year, but his improved offense will be a huge assett to Tyndall. Junior sharpshooting guards
Terrance Hill and
Ty Proffitt are the other two returnees. Look for both to play major roles on both ends of the court.
Following Friday night’s opener, MSU hosts North Carolina A&T on Sunday before hitting the road for four straight games that span Thanksgiving and include stops at Florida and Ohio State.
