Eagle Rifle Rebounds Nicely Against VMI

MOREHEAD, Ky. – On Saturday, hungry to rebound from a three match winless streak, the Morehead State rifle team flexed their muscles and brought out the big guns against Virginia Military Institute.

Fielding both a gold team and a blue team, the Eagles shot tremendously as a team, placing seven individual shooters in the top eight of the smallbore category, and claiming all five spots in the top five of the air rifle category.

Leading the Eagles in both categories, senior Elizabeth Lyon fired her season best 1,160 combined score. Lyon, a part of the MSU Gold team, was accompanied by newcomer Mary Saenger, who totaled impressive scores of 569 in air rifle and 564 in smallbore, and junior Justin Egan, who fired his season best air rifle score of 564.

The MSU Gold team dominated the event, recording a 2826 smallbore final, and 2275 air rifle final for an aggregate of 5101. Their score was 900 points better than VMI’s mixed squad, which shot an aggregate of 4201.

The MSU Blue team finished with the second highest score of the day, posting an aggregate of 4387. Leading the way for the Blue team was Nicole Heitmeyer, shooting a team high in both categories. She fired a smallbore score of 554 and the 5th best individual air rifle score of 557. Kathleen Mulligan was also excellent for the Blue team, turning in a season best air rifle score of 554.

Other individual notables include Shawn Holley (560 smallbore, 560 air rifle), Rob Gagliani (569 smallbore, 540 air rifle), and Katie Bush (550 air rifle).

The rifle team will be back at the range Nov. 20, when they travel to face the University of Akron for their third road shoulder-to-shoulder contest of the season. The Eagles’ season record currently stands at 2-4.
