Austin Peay Upends Eagle Volleyball in OVC Championship Match

MOREHEAD, Ky. -
The 2010 Ohio Valley Conference championship volleyball match turned out to not be a happy ending for the host Morehead State Eagles. The Eagles rallied to win the first set 25-23, but then the Lady Govs reeled off 25-14, 25-21 and 25-14 victories to claim their first OVC Tournament title since 1991.

The Eagles saw their season record dip to 25-8, while APSU will head into the NCAA Tournament with a 26-6 mark.

For MSU, sophomore Ellie Roberson was named to the All-Tournament Team as she topped MSU with a season high 22 kills while hitting .271. Emma Keough also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team as she totaled four blocks.

Austin Peay's Nikki Doyle was named MVP of the tournament. She had 17 kills and hit .452 in the title match. Ilyanna Hernandez also earned all-tournament status as she landed 16 kills and hit .343.

The Eagles saw Austin Peay's net defense rise to to occasion late in the match. In the fourth set alone, the Lady Govs blocked seven Eagle shots, and APSU had 11 rejections for the match. Tyalor Skinner had six.

Roberson attempted a season high 48 swings and connected on 22. Kirstie Brangers totaled 41 assists in her final OVC match. The Eagles had a tough time on offense though as they hit .187. Austin Peay also won the back battle with 53 digs to MSU's 43. The Lady Govs offense generated a .304 attack efficiency.

The Eagles will wait to see if they will get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. If not, then Saturday's match was the career finales for three wonderful seniors - Brangers, Holly Evans, who was the 2010 OVC Player of the Year, and Kaitlin Craven.
