MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State senior volleyball student-athletes
Holly Evans and
Kirstie Brangers have been honored with one of the most prestigious postseason awards as the pair has been named All-Midwest Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Evans was named First-Team All-Region while Brangers was named Honorable Mention All-Region.
Coach
Jaime Gordon was thrilled with the recognition.
“Having two athletes honored regionally says a lot about the level at which our program has been able to compete. It takes a complete team effort to make it possible for Kirstie and Holly to shine the way they have. I am very happy for them and this is well deserved,” he said. “Holly and Kirstie have had fantastic seasons. I am extremely proud of their accomplishments, but the manner in which they have conducted themselves has been first class.”
Evans becomes only the third student-athlete in program history to be named First-Team All-Region, joining Amy Almond (2001, 2002) and Katelyn Barbour (2008). Evans will now be on the ballot for AVCA All-American consideration.
She was named Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-OVC after leading the league in hitting percentage in all matches (.364) and in OVC matches (.394). Evans also averaged 2.97 kills per set and piled up 95 total blocks. She finished her career ranked in the top 10 in career block assists at MSU. Evans had better than 10 matches where she hit .400 or better this year and four where she hit .600 or higher. Evans also was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week four times, joining Brangers as the only MSU volleyball student-athletes to win more than three OVC weekly awards in one season in the history of the program.
Brangers finished with 1,296 assists in 2010 to lead the OVC as she was named First-Team All-Conference. That assist figure was the ninth best season total in school history, and Brangers’ 3,196 career assists ranked her fifth all-time at MSU. She also hit .256 this season with 24 aces, 290 digs and 47 total blocks. Brangers was named OVC Setter of the Week four times.
