MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State rifle team will travel to Murray, Ky., this weekend to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference rifle championships. The two events the Eagles will be competing in are the smallbore and air rifle, these two events scores are put together to form an aggregate score that determines the team winner.
The Eagles started off the year a little slow but have turned it on as of late, having won their last three matches, which include victories against VMI (twice), Rose Hulman, and Tennessee Tech.
Elizabeth Lyon has been leading the rifle team this year. Lyon has taken first in the air rifle event in the last three Eagle wins; she has also won the smallbore event in two out of the last three wins. She has finished first in the air rifle event five different times this year and has taken first in the smallbore twice. Kevin Mulligan has also done well this year for the Eagles. Mulligan has fired firsts in the smallbore event three different times. Lyon and Mulligan were also awarded OVC rifle Athletes of the Month for December.
Other notable Eagles have been Shawn Holley who has finished third twice,
Nicole Heitmeyer and
Kathleen Bush who each have a second place finish, and
Rob Gagliani who has a third and two fourth place finishes. Gagliani is also a nominee for Freshman of the Year.
After this weekend the Rifle team will compete in the NCAA sectional on Feb. 12 and the WIRC championships which start on Feb. 19.
