MOREHEAD, Ky. - It will be a women's basketball contest to see which accipitridae is tougher on Saturday. Huh, you ask?
An accipitridae is an eagle, and the Morehead State Eagles will be hosting the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at 5:07 p.m. Saturday night in Johnson Arena. The game can be heard live on the Eagle Sports Network and seen live on Wazoo Sports Network.
Saturday's game is sponsored by the Kentucky Army National Guard, and the first 50 students will receive free tee shirts.
MSU enters the game on a four-game win streak and is averaging 81.3 points per game in its last three games - all double digit wins. The Eagles hit a school record 17 three-pointers in the 80-53 win over Jacksonville State on Thursday.
Saturday's contest will pit the OVC's two top scorers against one another. MSU's Chynna Bozeman leads the league with 19.0 points per game and 84 three-pointers, while Tech's Tacarra Hayes scores 16.7 per game. Hayes owns the league' top single game effort this year with 39 against Austin Peay. Bozeman also torched APSU for 37 points just last weekend. In the first meeting with Tech, Bozeman was held in check while Hayes became just the fifth player in TTU history to record a triple-double.
Overall, the Golden Eagles are still struggling to earn a top eight spot and make the OVC tournament field. They currently sit in ninth place at 4-8 in the league and 9-13 overall after a 61-60 loss at Eastern Kentucky Thursday.
MSU, meanwhile, is firmly in second place at 10-2 and just one half game behind leader Eastern Illinois. The 17 wins by this year's team marks only the fifth time since 1981-82 an MSU squad has reached at least the 17-win mark. The school record in the NCAA era is 21 wins, while just three more conference victories would secure the program's best-ever conference winning percentage.
