Eagle Tennis Tops Murray State, 5-2, to Begin OVC Play 2-0

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State men’s tennis team started Ohio Valley Conference action 2-0 with a 5-2 victory against Murray State Saturday afternoon at the Sadler Tennis Courts.

Greg Anderson and Jerry Sundgren started the Eagles off on the right foot in doubles competition with an 8-1 victory over the Racers’ Ben Clos and Jorge Caetano. But it was duo Bradley Bryan and Lovell Medcalf that really lit the fire for Morehead State.

“Thunder and Lightning [referring to Medcalf and Bryan] was what got us started with an 8-0 doubles victory,” head coach Kevin Fulton stated. “Then we won another doubles match with Anderson and Sundgren, and they made a great comeback after losing the first one.”

Nathan Blum and Nathan Martin rounded out doubles competition in third position, coming up a little short with an 8-6 defeat to Murray State’s Luka Milicevic and Renaldo Domoney.

In singles competition, Anderson and Sundgren fought hard in the number one and two positions to beat out their opponents. Anderson won with a 7-6, 6-4 score and Sundgren with a 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 mark.

Bryan did not fare as well in his singles competition as he did in doubles, giving up a Murray State victory to Milicevic, 6-2, 6-2.

Blum dropped his singles match to Murray State’s Domoney, 6-0, 7-6, in the number four position.

“(Nathan) Blum came up a little short today but he played a better match the second time and will continue to improve,” Fulton said.

Dusan Milovanovic contributed on court five with his 7-5, 6-1 defeat against Jadir Semensin. Nathan Martin finished off a great day for the Eagles in the number six position. Martin defeated his Murray State opponent 6-2, 6-4.

“It was a real good day for us and a great team effort. I am so proud of the effort everyone on the team gave, including the guys that weren’t on the court. I am really looking forward to next week and our next challenge as a team,” Fulton said.

The Eagles host Eastern Illinois on March 28.
