Men's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight With 5-2 Victory Over EIU

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State men’s tennis team got a key victory against Eastern Illinois 5-2 on Sunday evening at the Wellness Center Indoor Courts. With the win the Eagles are now 9-5 on the season and 3-0 in conference.

The Eagles have won four straight matches and now face a pivotal match at Eastern Kentucky for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference race on Tuesday.

“Today was a battle from start to finish. The crowd was electric and it carried us through a very tough doubles point.” said Coach Kevin Fulton “Jerry Sundgren was superb today winning both singles and doubles.”

The Eagles started of well in the doubles winning two of three. At number one Greg Anderson and Jerry Sundgren battled in a tough match and came out victorious with a 9-7 win over Rutherford and Haag. Bradley Bryan and Lovell Medcalf beat Hilgert and Race 8-3 to secure the 1-0 early lead for the Eagles. In the three spot Nathan Martin and Nathan Blum were bested by Firth and Sperry 8-6.

In singles play the Eagles kept the momentum rolling winning four out of six. At number one Anderson fell in a tough match to Rutherford 7-6(6), 3-6, 4-6. In the two spot Sundgren won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 and in the three spot Bryan was triumphant over Race 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. At number four Blum was beat by Hilgert 6-3, 6-2 and in the fifth position Dusan Milovanovic gathered the win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 over Haag. Rounding it out for the Eagles was Blum who bested Sperry 6-3, 4-6, (10-4).

The Eagles will be on the road at Eastern Kentucky March 30, first serve for the men’s match is at 3:00 p.m.
