MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State volleyball team will be facing tough competition this weekend when the Eagles travel to Evanston, Ill., to play in the Nortwestern University Challenge. MSU faces the host school, Utah, and Mississippi.
Live stats of all the Eagle matches will be available through Northwestern's web site.
"These three teams are all very solid, so we will have to be at our best," said coach Jaime Gordon. "I think playing against teams like this early on will help us become a stronger team, both physically and mentally."
The action begins on Friday when the Eagles battle the Utah Utes at 5:30 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena. On Saturday, the Eagles face Northwestern at 1 p.m. and finish with Mississippi at 5:30 p.m.
All three opponents have started off with at least two wins, and all three have at least one standout player with impressive individual stat totals so far.
But, that's not to say the Eagles are not up to par as well. MSU is 2-1 on the year and very well could have been 3-0. MSU was leading Georgia State 2-1 before falling 3-2. The Eagles then beat Wright State 3-1 and North Florida 3-0.
The Eagles got a tremendous defensive performance from junior libero Liz Schuler. In her first three matches at the position, she chalked up 77 digs (6.42/set) and now leads the league in digs. MSU also got 17 total blocks from sophomore Annie Gruenschlaeger and 14 from senior Holly Evans.
The Eagles are 0-1 all-time against Utah and Mississippi and have never faced Northwestern. MSU has a 25-39 all-time record against the Southeastern Conference, a 2-8 mark against the Big Ten and is just 1-1 all-time against the Mountain West.
