MSU Rifle Takes Columbus State to the Wire in Season Opener

MOREHEAD, KY. – In their first competition of the fall season Saturday, MSU Rifle fell just 25 total points short of topping Columbus State.

Fielding both a Gold team and a Blue team, the MSU Gold team posted an impressive 2296 air rifle score to accompany a 2255 smallbore score, totaling for a 4551 aggregate score in the contest.

Leading the way for the Gold team was Eagle senior Elizabeth Lyon, who posted a match best smallbore score of 570, along with a solid 571 air rifle score. Fellow teammate Mary Saenger shot an impressive 566 smallbore score to accompany a 578 air rifle score that placed her third among individuals.

Rounding out the lineup for the MSU Gold team was senior Shawn Holley, and juniors Katie Bush and Justin Egan.

Leading the way for the MSU Blue team were Nicole Heitmeyer and newcomer Kathleen Mulligan. Heitmeyer posted a team best 573 air rifle score, while Mulligan shot the top team smallbore score of 543.

Finishing out the Blue squad were sophomores Hannah Wagner and Garrett Plooy, and MSU newcomer John Malovrh.

Columbus State was led by April Dunn and Phil Huckaby, who shot the top overall scores in both air rifle and smallbore, and contributed to their team aggregate of 4576.

The MSU Rifle team is back in action Oct. 25 when they travel to take on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technolgy.
