MOREHEAD, Ky.--Redemption weekend continues for Morehead State men’s basketball Saturday. After avenging an early-season loss to Tennessee State Thursday, the Eagles welcome Austin Peay into Johnson Arena with plans to do the same to the league-leading Governors. Tip-off for the crucial OVC matchup, which is sponsored by Perimeter Periodontics, is set for 7:15 p.m.
This will be the 98th meeting between the long-time conference rivals, in a series where the last four meetings have been decided by three or fewer points and three of those games have gone to overtime.
MSU pulled off a key win over TSU Thursday night, rallying from 14 down in the second half to beat the Tigers. The win moved the Eagles back within a game of second place in the OVC race and the chance to earn a double bye for the OVC Tournament.
Kenneth Faried had a monster game with 23 points and 23 rebounds versus TSU, but key 3-pointers by Ty Proffitt and Sam Goodman helped complete the comeback and give MSU the win. The 23 rebounds was the second-most by Faried, who moved his NCAA-leading rebounding average up over 14 per game. He also ranks second in the OVC in scoring at 17.1 points per game.
The Govs however, boast the league’s leading scorer in TyShwan Edmondson, who is tallying 19.2 points per game. Josh Terry also averages 12.1 points per game and John Fraley leads APSU on the boards with 6.7 rebounds per game. Austin Peay currently leads the OVC with an 8-2 record and it is14-8 overall. Their two league losses have come at the hands of Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech, but the Govs have also won in two of the toughest arenas in the OVC for a road team, Eastern Kentucky and Murray State.
The Eagles next travel to Jacksonville State next Thursday to play the Gamecocks at 8:45 p.m.
