NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior outside hitter Ellie Roberson had a career-high 24 kills, including six alone in the fifth set, and hit .413 to lead the Morehead State volleyball team to a come-from-behind 3-2 win at Tennessee State's Kean Hall Monday night.
Roberson connected on more than half her swings (46 attempts and just five errors) as the Eagles rallied from a set down to stay perfect in the Ohio Valley Conference at 7-0. MSU's season sweep of the host Tigers also upped the Eagles' overall mark to 12-5, marking their seventh consecutive victory and the 24th win in the last 25 OVC matches. TSU fell to 8-6 and 4-3 in the league.
MSU dropped the opening set 25-15 as the Tigers' offense generated 18 kills and just three errors. But, MSU responded with a 25-20 win in the second frame and hit .429 en route to a 25-17 victory in the third. The Tigers rallied to send the match into the decIding set, winning the fourth 25-21. A 9-4 run, capped by a Roberson kill, pushed MSU's set three lead from 3-2 to 12-6, and the Eagles thwarted a Tiger rally to escape with the win.
Both teams finished with 53 kills and 28 errors, but the Eagles doubled up the Tigers in aces, 6-3, and out-dug the hosts 68-63. Sophomore libero Leslie Schellhaas totaled 25 digs to lead the Eagles, while fellow second-year Eagle Lindsey Roth came up with 10.
MSU redshirt senior Emma Keough may have been outshadowed in the kill column by Roberson, but she still landed nine winners and hit .320. Redshirt sophomore Aryn Bohannon also finished with nine spikes down on the Tiger side of the net.
Shaquita Williams led the Tigers with 18 kills, and Britani Hathorn salvaged 27 Eagle attempts to lead all players in digs.
Morehead State returns home this weekend to host Tennessee Tech Friday at 7 p.m. and Jacksonville State Saturday at 5 p.m. following MSU's home football game. Fans who bring their football ticket stub to Wetherby Gym for the Saturday volleyball match will receive free admission.
