Volleyball Eagles Use Efficient Service Game to Oust Tennessee Tech, 3-0

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
The saying “You’ve got to have an ace in the hole” certainly rang true for the Morehead State volleyball team Friday night against Tennessee Tech.

The host Eagles served 16 aces as MSU remained perfect in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 3-0 sweep of the TTU Golden Eagles at Wetherby Gym. MSU won its eighth straight match to improve to 13-5 and 8-0 in the OVC. TTU fell to 2-16 and 1-7 in the league.

MSU also won its 25th OVC match in the last 26 league outings.

Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Aryn Bohannon and sophomore defensive specialist Lindsey Roth each had five aces, while redshirt senior middle blocker Emma Keough and senior defender Liz Schuler landed two aces.

The Eagles were also extremely efficient on offense. MSU hit a season high .461 via 45 kills and just 10 attack errors. Bohannon had a team-high nine kills and hit .412, while junior Annie Gruenschlaeger slammed down eight winners and hit .615 with no attack errors. Junior Ellie Roberson tallied eight kills and hit at a .417 clip, while Keough totaled seven spikes and hit .545, Redshirt freshman Laura McDermott notched six kills, hit .385 and rejected a team-high three Tech attacks.

Defensively, Leslie Schellhaas led the Eagles with 11 digs. Caitlin Clark had a match-best 31 assists.

TTU only made eight attack errors in the match, but the Golden Eagles also managed just 17 kills and finished with a .141 attack percentage. Kelsey Gray had five kills to lead the visitors.

Both teams started efficiently as the Eagles hit .481 in the opening set while Tech managed to play the entire set errorless on the attack. But, the Eagles landed 17 kills to the Golden Eagles’ eight, and MSU served up five aces. Gruenschlaeger and Roberson combined for nine winners.

The aces continued to pile up in the second frame as well. The Eagles landed nine more solo winners while also keeping up the offensive pace. MSU hit .444 with 11 kills. The Golden Eagles cooled off with just two kills and four errors.

The Eagles totaled 17 kills and hit .452 in the final set, adding two more aces, and limiting Tech to just a .103 attack percentage.

The Eagles return to the court at Wetherby Gym on Saturday to face Jacksonville State at 5 p.m.
