MOREHEAD, Ky. - Laura McDermott had 10 kills and hit .500 and Annie Gruenschlaeger finished off a near perfect offensive weekend with seven kills and no errors as the Morehead State volleyball squad defeated visiting Jacksonville State 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-21) at Wetherby Gym Saturday.
The Eagles ran their winning streak to nine matches and remained perfect in the Ohio Valley Conference at 9-0. The win also pushed MSU's home conference success streak to 16 consecutive matches. In MSU's nine OVC wins this season, it has only dropped three sets. JSU plummeted to 6-13 and 4-5 in the league.
Gruenschlaeger, a junior middle blocker who had eight kills and no errors Friday night versus Tennessee Tech, landed seven winners today on 12 total swings for a team-high .583 attack efficiency. McDermott, a redshirt freshman middle blocker, led the team with her 10 kills and made just one miscue, resulting in a .500 hitting percentage. Those two also led MSU with four blocks apiece.
Junior outside hitter Ellie Roberson also had nine kills. Senior Liz Schuler and sophomore Leslie Schellhaas each dug 10 Gamecock attacks as the Eagles out-dug JSU 49-42. Caitlin Clark had a match-best 31 assists as the Eagles also topped the kill column over JSU, 38-27.
Stephanie Koontz led the Gamecocks with nine kills, while Kelly Cole led all players with 11 digs.
The Eagles opened the match on an offensive tear, piling up 14 kills and making just two errors (.480) to run away with a 25-10 victory. MSU cooled off a bit in the second frame, getting 13 kills, but making six mistakes. The Eagles finished by hitting .229 and nailing 11 kills in the finale.
Defensively, MSU slammed back eight blocks, holding JSU to an .058 attack clip.
