RALEIGH, N.C. -- Juniors Richard Howell, DeShawn Painter and Scott Wood combined for 62 points on 22-of-27 from the floor to help Atlantic Coast Conference member North Carolina State register a 91-61 victory over Morehead State before a crowd of 10,082 on Sunday evening at the RBC Center.

“This is a disappointing loss, but tip your cap to North Carolina State,” Morehead State Head Coach Donnie Tyndall said. “They were bigger, stronger, faster and better than us tonight. Mark Gottfried is an excellent coach and his team was well prepared.”
NC State shot 61 percent (33-of-54) from the field and 77 percent (17-of-22) from the line. Morehead State was limited to 40 percent (19-of-47) overall and nailed just 63 percent (15-of-24) at the stripe.
The Wolfpack had a 34-23 rebounding edge and 40-14 advantage in paint points. NCSU was also credited with 26 assists in the contest, while MSU handed out just nine.
“(Richard) Howell and (DeShawn) Painter really got going when our starting post players got in foul trouble and we didn’t locate (Scott) Wood very well in our zone,” Tyndall said.
Morehead State senior Terrance Hill scored 14 points on 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from long distance. Senior Ty Proffitt added nine points and four assists for the Eagles, while junior Milton Chavis chipped in with eight points.
NC State led from start-to-finish. The Wolfpack built a 21-10 cushion less than eight minutes into the game and never looked back. Their big lead of 36 points came at the 3:27 mark of the second half.
Morehead State wraps up its two-game road trip on Tuesday when it visits the College of Charleston at 8 a.m. ET. The contest is part of ESPN’s College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon and will be televised by the worldwide leader.
“We have to put this one behind us and get ready for another big game on Tuesday morning,” Tyndall added. “We will look at the film on Monday to see how we can improve. We played 13 guys tonight by design. We need to see who wants to be in this (regular-season) rotation. There are certainly some minutes up for grabs and I want to see who separates themselves from the pack.”
