MOREHEAD, Ky.--Morehead State men’s basketball travels to arch rival Eastern Kentucky for a mid-week matchup with the Colonels. The game is crucial for seeding purposes for MSU, with a first-round bye on the line and a chance to win the OVC regular season still at stake. Tip-off for the rivalry game will be at 7:00 p.m.
The Eagles (19-9; 11-4 OVC) have won seven straight, the last loss coming at the hands of the Colonels in Johnson Arena in January. Wednesday’s game will also be senior night for EKU, who has won eight of their last 10. The Colonels are 15-11 overall and in fifth place at 9-6 in the OVC.
A win Wednesday locks MSU into no worse than fourth place and secures one of four crucial first-round byes in the OVC Tournament.
Kenneth Faried and Demonte Harper, who lead the Eagles with 17.3 points and 15.6 points per game respectively, were joined by fellow senior Sam Goodman in double-digit scoring in a senior-night win over SEMO. It will be MSU’s ability to rebound and score second-chance opportunities that will be key to beating Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles have a 12-board advantage in rebounding margin, but in the first meeting, Morehead State scored just 13 second-chance points despite holding a 22-rebound advantage.
Eastern Kentucky is led by Spencer Perrin’s 13.4 points per game and Justin Stommes’ 11.6 points per game. Perrin also leads the Colonels with 5.4 rebounds a contest. Josh Daniel also averages 11.2 points and Joshua Jones is at an even 10.0 points per game.
EKU has won three straight and eight of their last 10. The losses have come against an offensive-minded Tennessee Tech and an all-around good Austin Peay team.
Morehead State will wrap up the week with a non-conference trip Saturday to play Indiana State in the Bracketbuster. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
