GREENSBORO, N.C. - After being shutout earlier in the day against Minnesota, the Morehead State softball offense came alive in its second game versus host UNC Greensboro, crushing the Spartans 13-1 in five innings Friday afternoon at the UNCG Spartan Classic.
Morehead State (4-7) staked starter Kelcey McMurray to an 8-0 lead after two innings. MSU added three more in the third and two in the fourth. The Eagles had nine hits and took advantage of three Spartan errors and seven walks issued by three UNCG (6-5) pitchers. Josie Felix only tossed one official inning and was saddled with the loss to fall to 2-1.
"Our hitters were patient and we had a lot of walks and wild pitches today. Our defense was solid and all three of our pitchers gave us strong efforts," said coach Holly Bruder.
Brooke McCartney went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Rebecca Butler was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Kayla Brill had two RBIs, and Sam Woodall recorded two RBIs even though she did not get a hit. Four Eagles scored two runs apiece.
McMurray (2-0) was in the circle for the first three innings and allowed just four hits and one unearned run. Ashley Boyd and Jami Whitcomb each tossed an inning and recorded a strikeout each.
The first three Eagle hitters reached via walks in the second, and Stephanie Etter tallied an RBI single. McCartney laid down an RBI sacrifice squeeze bunt to score Elizabeth Wagner. Kelsea Bullock walked to force in another run, and Woodall was plunked by relief pitcher Raeanne Hanks' third offering to push across another tally. Butler and Brill each had two-out, two-run singles to give MSU its eight runs in the frame.
Woodall reached on a error with two runners on in the third to send MSU's ninth run home, and Butler added an RBI single before Woodall trotted home via a wild pitch.
In the fourth, Jamie Massaro's grounder to shortstop was mishandled and allowed two more runs to come home.
