GREENSBORO, N.C. - The old addage that walks always come back to haunt you rang true in Morehead State softball's contests against Kansas Saturday. Eagle pitchers gave up 20 walks as the Eagles lost a 14-0, five-inning affair to the Jayhawks in the morning and fell 11-0 in five innings later in the day.
Kansas scored multiple runs in every inning but the fourth and used nine hits, plus the 13 walks and multiple Eagle wild pitches, to cruise past MSU in the first game. MSU walked seven in the second game and the Jayhawks scored in all four at-bats. The Eagles' record dipped to 4-9.
"There's not much to say about these losses. Pitching let us down, bottom line," said coach Holly Bruder. "We only got six hits also, so that didn't help either."
In the opener, Kelcey McMurray was saddled with the loss for the Eagles, allowing six runs in two innings. All three of the Eagles' other hurlers saw action in the game and issued multiple walks.
Kristen Martinez surrendered two hits in four innings to collect the win for the Jayhawks, who improved to 12-1. Marisa Ingle and Rosie had two hits each to pace Kansas at the plate.
Sam Woodall and Kelsea Bullock had the Eagle hits.
In the nightcap, Kansas, which was receiving votes in several national top 25 polls, scored five in the first, two in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth.
Imperial took the loss for the Eagles, allowing eight hits and five earned runs in the first two. Whitcomb issued five walks in the final two frames.
Woodall, Kayla Brill, Elizabeth Wagner, and Bullock recorded hits for the Eagle offense.
