LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville Cardinals scored 10 of their 12 runs with two outs Thursday afternoon as they handed Morehead State softball a 12-1 defeat in five innings at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals scored a run in the first as Colby Wherry drove in Jennifer Estanban from third base after Esteban had led off the game with a single. U of L tacked on five runs in the second, three coming via a three-run homer by Maggie Ruckenbrod. They added three more in the third as Chelsea Bemis tallied a two-run triple off the right field fence. They finished off the 12-run barrage with a trio in the fourth as well.
Morehead State scored in the third when Taylor Sherrit’s grounder to first was misplayed, allowing Elizabeth Wagner to cross the plate. She had led off the inning with a single.
Wagner, Sam Woodall and Sherritt had MSU’s three hits.
Bemis was 2-for-4 with four RBI to pace the Cardinals, who had 13 hits off two MSU pitchers. Ashley Imperial allowed six runs in two innings to fall to 3-5 for MSU. Kelcey McMurray allowed six runs but just one of them was earned as the Eagles made three errors.
Caralisa Connell picked up the victory for U of L to improve to 4-2.
The Eagles return home this weekend to host Austin Peay, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
