Eagles Dominate, Cruise To Win At Ocala Tournament

OCALA, Fla.—Morehead State women’s golf ran away with the team title at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational, winning the two-day event by 17 strokes. The tournament concluded Tuesday at the par 72, 5960-yard Juliette Falls Golf Club.

MSU golfers took the top four spots in the 30-player field, led by junior medalist Emma Jonsson’s 146 (69-77). Jonsson, who had the lowest round of the tournament with Monday’s 69, had an eagle and four birdies to capture medalist honors by one stroke.

Jonsson led the Eagles to a 36-hole total of 594 (286-308) to outpace Jacksonville State’s 611 (300-311). Marshall had the lowest team second round, shooting a 306 to finish third with a 621 (315-306).

“We are thrilled to win another event this year,” said MSU coach Stephanie Barker. “As much as we would have liked to shoot under par again, the course was tougher today and we worked hard to hold it together as a team.”

Eagle senior Paige Lausier finished second overall with a 147 (71-76) with five birdies to place just behind Jonsson. Sophomore Marisa Kamelgarn also scored for MSU with a 150 (74-76), tying for fourth place overall. Kamelgarn and Lausier were joined by junior Emma Eksell with five birdies each to lead MSU.

Senior Lynn Grunkemeyer, playing as a non-scoring individual, placed third overall with a 148 (71-77). She was the highest placing individual. Eksell, also playing as an individual, tied for 10th overall with a 154 (71-83), and junior Karolina Tunstig shot a 168 (80-88) to finish tied for 29th.

“It was the first time as a team that we actually took home all of the available hardware from the tournament,” Barker said. “I am really excited for the team and individually for Emma, Paige and Lynn, It was an exciting week.”

Freshmen Sofia Pettersson and Amalie Munck rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a 157 (78-79) and a 160 (72-88) respectively.

The highest finishing non-MSU player was Jacksonville State’s Ornella Arrizon, who tied Kamelgarn with a 150 (76-74) as an individual. JSU also had the highest finishing non-MSU player attached to a team in Lourdes Lopez, who scored a 151 (74-77).

Ohio finished fourth in the five-team field with a 624 (312-312) and Montana State placed fifth with a 643 (318-325).

Morehead State will next compete in the Cincinnati Spring Invitational this weekend in Crystal Springs, Fla.
