Eagle Golf Finishes Second At UC Spring Invite

CRYSTAL SPRINGS, Fla.—Morehead State women’s golf finished in second at the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational, closing out day three with a 54-hole score of 895 (290-301-304). The event concluded Sunday afternoon at the Plantation Golf Resort.

North Texas won the 23-team event with an 882, shooting a tournament low round of 289 in high winds Sunday to overtake MSU, the leader through the first two days. The 289 bested the Eagles’ previous tournament low round of 290, shot in Friday’s opening round.

"This has been a great week for our team. To be in position to win a tournament of this caliber is a testament to how well our team is playing and how talented they really are,” said MSU coach Stephanie Barker. “We gave a valiant effort to beat a top 50 team in the nation and win another event for our university. We would have rather won, but our hats go off to North Texas for a great round in tricky conditions."

Senior Paige Lausier placed third overall to lead Morehead State with a 216 (69-74-73). Lausier carded a 73 Sunday, beating her day two score by one stroke. Sophomore Marissa Kamelgarn was the other Eagle in the top 10, placing sixth overall with a 220 (73-72-75).

Junior Emma Jonsson, the reigning OVC Golfer of the Week, tied for 39th overall with a 232 (74-81-77) and freshman Sofia Pettersson carded a 236 (79-78-79). Senior Lynn Grunkemeyer finished with a 237 (74-77-86) to tie for 59th overall.

MSU also had three players playing as individuals, freshman Amalie Munck, who finished just in front of Jonsson with a 231 (75-79-77) to place 32nd overall. Karolina Tunstig shot a 234 (76-80-78) to tie for 50th overall and junior Emma Eksell tied for 76th overall with a 240 (82-78-80).

The Eagles finished two strokes in front of third place Florida Southern and 12 strokes ahead for fourth-place Campbell. There were no other OVC teams at the event. Briana Carlson of 11th-place Florida Gulf Coast took home medalist honors after shooting a 211 (74-70-67).

MSU next plays at the Pinehurst Spring Challenge on April 4-5.
