Jonsson's Medalist Effort Spurs Women's Golf To Victory

RICHMOND, Ky.—Morehead State women's golf rallied from 11 strokes down in the final nine holes to win the EKU Lady Colonel Classic by two strokes over Arkansas State Sunday afternoon. Junior Emma Jonsson took medalist honors with a 220.

It was the fourth time this season and the second time in the spring MSU has won a tournament. It also marked the second straight year the Eagles have won the EKU spring event, which was played this season at the par 72 and 5,801-yards Arlington Golf Club. It was the final regular season event for the Eagles.

“Today was an exciting way to finish the regular season on a high note,” MSU coach Stephanie Barker said. “I’m so proud of the team for staying strong and rallying to win here again. Once again they all proved what kind of heart and drive they have.”

Round two of the tournament, which was suspended due to darkness Saturday, was completed Sunday prior to the start of round three. The Eagles surged in round two, moving from fourth to a tie for third after round two, and then surged again late on Sunday to win.

Jonsson had six birdies and 38 pars in the three-round tournament. She shot a 75-72-73 and moved from eighth place after the first round to second and then first on day three. She earned All-Tournament honors as did senior Paige Lausier, who finished with a consistent 225 (75-75-75) to tied for fifth overall. Lausier had nine birdies to lead the field.

Freshman Sofia Pettersson tied for ninth overall with a 227 (77-76-74) and sophomore Marisa Kamelgarn tied for 15th with a 230 (79-76-75). Pettersson had six birdies and Kamelgarn 33 pars in the 54-hole event.

Lynn Grunkemeyer, whose day-three score helped push MSU over the top, finished with a 231 (79-78-74). Grunkemeyer tied for 17th overall, meaning all five Eagle scoring golfers finished in the top 20.

Freshman Amalie Munck, playing as an individual, shot a 242 (77-84-81) to tie for 49th overall.
Murray State (third), host Eastern Kentucky (sixth) Austin Peay (seventh), Tennessee Tech (11th) Tennessee State (13th) were the other OVC teams at the event.

Those OVC teams along with Morehead State begin the 2011 OVC Tournament in Dickson, Tenn., April 21-23 at Greystone Golf Club. MSU will be seeded third based on last year results.
