NOTRE DAME, Ind.--Morehead State women’s golf makes its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament May 5-7. The Eagles, Ohio Valley Conference Champions and winners of the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
The Eagles will participate in the Notre Dame (Central) Regional and will tee off as the 22nd seed in the 24-team field. MSU begins play as part of the second wave of teams, which begin their tee times at 12:30 p.m. ET. Morehead State's first tee time is 1:25 p.m. with 11-minute intervals after that. The Eagles will play with Illinois State at Butler in the first round.
MSU will rely on the play of OVC Player of the Year and Tournament Medalist Emma Jonsson to be an anchor in a very competitive field. Jonsson, a junior, won five different events this season, including tournaments which included teams in the Central Regional. Senior Paige Lausier and sophomore Marisa Kamelgarn will also play key roles in Morehead State’s chances to advance to the NCAA Finals. Both players earned First Team All-Conference honors and both finished in the OVC top five to earn All-Tournament nods as well.
Kamelgarn, Lausier and Jonsson each have a stroke average of 75.5. Jonsson and Lausier each have a low round of 69, which are the lowest rounds by MSU golfers this season. Kamelgarn has a low round of 71 this season.
Both senior Lynn Grunkemeyer and freshman Sofia Pettersson have the capability of providing significant scoring options for coach Stephanie Barker’s team to advance as well. Pettersson has a stroke average of 78.1 and Grunkemeyer a 79.0. Both players equaled Kamelgarn with a low round of 71.
The top eight teams following the 54-hole regional will advance to nationals in Bryan, Texas.
