MOREHEAD, Ky.— The winning streak rolls on for the Morehead State volleyball team over rival Eastern Kentucky.
The Eagles hit a season-best .408 en route to their 11th straight victory over Ohio Valley Conference rival EKU -- a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-21, 25-14) -- before a crowd of 945 on Wednesday night at Wetherby Gym.
The Eagles improve to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in OVC play, while the Colonels fall to 6-8 on the season and 1-2 in league action. MSU has now won 20 of its last 21 conference matches.
Morehead State was led offensively by redshirt sophomore outside hitter Aryn Bohannon and junior outside hitter Ellie Roberson. Bohannon recorded a match-high 15 kills, while Roberson added 14 winners. Bohannon (.591) and freshman outside hitter Alex Fuelling (.600) also tallied career-best hitting percentages.
MSU registered set hitting percentages of .526, .314, and .360, which led to the season-best mark. The Eagles also limited the Colonels to an .084 hitting percentage, including a -.121 clip in the final set.
Morehead State controlled the match throughout as there were only eight ties and two lead changes. The Eagles opened up a seven point lead late in the first set, led by four on several occasions in the second stanza, and closed out the match with their biggest advantage of the evening in the third frame.
Morehead State won the first set 25-18 behind the outstanding effort of Roberson. After starting the set down 1-0 the Eagles fired back with a 4-0 run to get the tone of the match on the right path. MSU totaled 23 kills to the Colonels’ 12, seven belonging to Roberson. Fuelling also contributed with a hitting percentage of .833.
Set two, won by the Eagles 25-21, was closely contested with seven ties. MSU opened with a 6-0 run over the Colonels for a score of 7-3. Later in the set EKU made a 4-0 run after the Eagles were up 16-12 to tie 17-17. After battling back and forth the Eagles finally maintained their lead after a kill from Roberson making the score 22-20 and never looked back.
Bohannon also collected 10 digs for her team-leading seventh double-double of the season. Junior setter Caitlin Clark also handed out 45 assists in the MSU win.
Freshman outside hitter Alexis Plagens led Eastern Kentucky with six kills.
