MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Former Morehead State men's basketball All-American Demonte Harper was selected in the second round of the 2012 National Basketball Association D-League draft by the Reno Bighorns.
The Bighorns, coached by former University of Kansas and Milwaukee Bucks' 7-footer Paul Mokeski, made Harper the fifth choice of the second round and the 21st overall selection.
Harper, a Nashville, Tenn., native, finished his Morehead State career as one of the most prolific scorers in program history. He hit the game-winning three-pointer to lift the 13th-seeded Eagles over fourth-seeded Louisville in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Harper finished his career with 1,436 points, placing 13th on MSU’s all-time list. His heroics in the 2010-11 season included two 20+ point games in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament that earned him MVP honors.
Following his senior season, he was named to the CollegeInsider.com/Lou Henson Mid-Major All-America Team. He signed with a top-level professional team in Croatia in 2011 and also made several appearances as a member of the Denver Nuggets Summer League team this year.
He is the second former Eagle drafted in the NBA D-League. In 2011, Maze Stallworth, MSU's career leader in three-pointers made, was taken in the seventh round by the Tulsa 66ers. He is a now an assistant coach at St. Catharine College (Ky.).
The NBA D-League is the official developmental league of the NBA. The Bighorns have affiliations with the Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings and Utah Jazz.
