MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The No. 17 Morehead State rifle team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend at No. 14 Akron and No. 16 Ohio State.
On Saturday, the Eagles fell to Akron, 4,568-4,533. Junior Mary Saenger posted the top score of the day, as she shot a 588 in air rifle to lead all shooters. She also added a 563 in smallbore, which helped the Eagles to a 2,264 total in the event.
Senior Rob Gagliani’s 571 in smallbore, which included two perfect scores, was good for third overall, and other notables included sophomore Ethan Cole (565 smallbore, 567 air rifle) and freshman Russell Smith (565 smallbore).
In a 4,610-4,550 defeat at Ohio State on Sunday, Cole posted the high total for the Eagles in smallbore (571), while Saenger (584) was just shy of ousting all shooters in air rifle for the second straight match.
Gagliani (567), Saenger (566) and Smith (558) rounded out the scoring in smallbore for MSU, while air rifle contributions came from Gagliani (571), Cole (570) and freshman Taylor Johnson (563).
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday when they host No. 4 Jacksonville State and No. 5 Murray State at Button Auditorium. In the first match of the season, MSU fell to JSU, 4,654-4,551.
